What Is Post-Vintage Motocross?

The American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association (AHRMA) has defined Post-Vintage as bikes that inspired the "long travel" revolution that transformed motocross into a sport very different from the earlier, short travel era.

MX Classes

Post-Vintage begins with the Historic class. The basic limitations are 9 inches of travel, front and rear. Bikes are also limited to 38mm fork tubes. Husqvarna GP's, Maico Adolf Weil replicas, early Monoshock Yamahas and the first Suzuki RM's all run in the Historic classes. These are the bikes that started the revolution!

The next class begins with the 1978 longer travel bikes. This is the Grand Prix class where the bikes have from 10-12 inches of travel. Water-cooling and linkage rear suspensions are not allowed. This era is when items like Fox Air Shox, Simons forks and aftermarket aluminum swingarms were the items everyone wanted on their bikes.

The last Post-Vintage class is called Ultima and it is for the bikes that ushered in the era of single shock, linkage rear suspension, large diameter forks and water-cooling. Brad Lackey won a world championship on a Suzuki RN500 that exemplifies this era. Bikes with disc brakes and power-valves are not allowed in this class.

What Is Northwest Post-Vintage MX?

Northwest Post-Vintage is a group of racers dedicated to preserving motocross as it was in 1975 through 1983. Back when names like Marty Smith, Hurricane Hannah, Tony DiStefano, Kent Howerton, Mark Barnett, and Broc Glover dominated on air-cooled bikes. When Jeff Ward, Johnny O'Mara, David Bailey and "Magoo" Chandler showed us what the water-cooled, linkage bikes were capable of.

This was the golden age of American motocross. Bob Hannah won the Trans-AMA. Marty Moates and Chuck Sun each won a 500cc USGP. Brad Lackey and Danny LaPorte were World Champions. The USA won the MX des Nations, with Danny Chandler winning all the motos!

If you raced during this era or wanted to and never got the chance, please come out and watch one of our events. Come see all the great bikes and talk to the riders. Afterwards come back to this website and click on JOIN US. Use the Discussion Board to ask any questions you have, get your bike ready and we'll see you at the starting line!
